Illawarra's own RNB-pop talent, Daisy Pring, is back with a vibrant new single, '31st of June', injecting a fresh electronic pulse into her signature sound. This track marks her first release of the year and offers a tantalising preview of her forthcoming debut EP, 'Treading Water', set to arrive on Thursday, 8th May.
While '31st of June' might sound like an upbeat dancefloor filler, perfect for a party playlist, its lyrics delve into a deeper emotional space. The song captures that feeling of hitting a wall when trying to move on from a past relationship. Daisy openly grapples with her internal struggle, expressing the immense effort she's put into getting over someone, only to feel an overwhelming sense of inevitability that she'll be stuck on them forever. Lines like 'I’ll be stuck on you / Till we have two moons / Till I watch the news / Till the sky’s not blue' perfectly encapsulate this sense of resignation.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Daisy explained, "This song essentially describes the feeling of losing hope of ever moving on from someone. I came up with the idea ‘31st of June’ because the date doesn’t exist, therefore highlighting the feeling that the day I will be over this person, will never come."
The single's infectious electronic groove, crafted with producer Chelsea Warner (known for her work with artists like Amelia Moore and Kwame), draws comparisons to the likes of Charli XCX and PinkPantheress. This deliberate sonic choice creates an intriguing contrast with the song's theme of heartbreak. As Daisy puts it, "Sonically, the song is very upbeat, with inspiration from PinkPantheress. The juxtaposition between the lyrics and the music represents the lows one can be feeling while putting up a show for those around them"
'Treading Water' represents a significant step for Daisy, building on the momentum of her previous well-received singles such as 'Reminder' and 'Anaesthesia'. The EP is a deeply personal collection, chronicling moments and narratives surrounding a significant breakup. Through the process of healing and growth, Daisy has distilled these experiences into a compelling set of tracks she's now ready to share with the world.
Fans will have the chance to experience the new music live with a series of upcoming performances. Daisy is scheduled for a free show at Ryan’s Hotel Thirroul this month, followed by the official 'Treading Water' EP launch at La La La’s in Wollongong on 23rd May. Looking further ahead, she's also slated to appear at the Crooked River Estate Winter Wine Festival in 2025.
