Hailing from Kerken, Germany, the enigmatic two-piece Aegror have recently made their mark on the underground metal scene with new album, ‘Reign of Disease’. Released on the 16th of May this year, an emerging after an eight-year hiatus, this self-produced and independently published release delivers a straight shot of modern metal, captivating listeners with its unique blend of post-black metal.
The journey for Aegror, whose name fittingly translates from Latin as "disease," has been one of evolution and perseverance. Since their formation in 2009, vocalist Narthaas, who is firmly rooted in true black metal and extreme metal, and guitarist Abyssus, who brings a background in thrash and progressive music, found themselves at a crossroads after their second album, ‘Dead Man's Diary’. Yet, their shared vision led them to continue as a project, a decision that has clearly paid off with ‘Reign of Disease’.
Abyssus's deft hand in recording, mixing, and mastering the album has ensured a polished, yet raw, sonic experience that elevates it beyond typical black metal production standards. The album dives headfirst into a grim narrative centred around Plaguebreeder, a malevolent being from another dimension intent on breaching into the human world. Yet, on a deeper level, the lyrics cleverly weave in metaphorical reflections on real-world crises, pandemics, and societal events, adding a layer of thought-provoking commentary to their intense sound.
The title track is a potent showcase of the album’s sound, opening with a powerful combination of building drums and screeching guitar chords. Narthaas's raw screams tear through the mix, with rapid tremolo guitar leads, slamming drums, and harsh vocals to deliver an intensely brutal yet grooving sound.
For fans of black metal, thrash, and extreme metal, ‘Reign of Disease’ is an undeniable triumph, showcasing a band that has not only returned with renewed vigour but has also carved out a distinctive niche for themselves.
"We started with 100 monthly listeners on Spotify and now pushing it up to 6k, but the numbers still rising and we can't believe it," shared the band, clearly astounded by the album's traction. This surge in listenership has already translated into offers for open-air festival slots, with Aegror now enlisting session musicians to bring their studio sound to the stage.
You can stream ‘Reign of Disease’ on all major platforms now and keep your eyes out for a highly limited vinyl pressing coming soon. For more from Aegror, join the duo on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, or through their website.
