Bean Magazine Unpack 'Folly', A Sun-Drenched Dive into Self-Awareness

Brisbane's favourite indie darlings, Bean Magazine, are back with their highly anticipated third EP, 'Folly', dropping today via Purple Phase / Warner Music Australia. Currently hitting the road with Ball Park Music throughout June and July, the trio is serving up a fresh batch of tunes that'll have you bopping along while pondering life's little quirks. And if you've been digging their recent output, you'll be pleased to hear that Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music was once again at the helm for production, lending his signature touch to their sound.

'Folly' is a seven-track journey that perfectly encapsulates those sun-drenched moments of self-discovery, embracing our imperfections with a knowing wink. It’s a brilliant blend of thrashing guitar riffs and infectious sing-alongs, born from frustration, alongside those gentler, more contemplative passages of quiet acceptance. Basically, it’s the sound of a band that knows how to turn a good old-fashioned self-deprecating chuckle into some seriously catchy tunes.

We've already had a taste of what 'Folly' has in store with the singles 'Free As Hell', 'Share You', and 'Ashamed That You Hate It'. Now, the full EP unveils four fresh tracks: 'Chippy Fler', 'Pretty', 'The One In The Egg Dress', and 'Carly'. This latest offering follows up on their 2024 EP, 'In The Shade', which also benefited from Cromack's golden touch.

Frontman Henry Creamer explains that the EP is "about being a fool and having a bit of a laugh at yourself." It’s an ode to the art of not taking yourself too seriously, especially when your mind starts to get a bit crowded with those self-defeating thoughts.

One of the standout tracks on the EP is 'Pretty', a sunny, jangly antidote to those post-tour blues. Its propulsive drums and bass lines loop back like those inescapable thoughts, as Henry cycles through a rush of feelings before building to a powerful scream about 'swimming in denial'. But on 'Folly', the self-doubt is never overwhelming – it's always delivered with a wink and a smile. With tunes this good, it’s clear Bean Magazine has absolutely nothing to worry about. Go give 'Folly' a listen – you won't regret it.
