BEX Explores New Love and Uncertainty in New Single 'A New Title'

Hailing from Auckland, singer-songwriter BEX is steadily carving out her own space within the alternative and indie music scene. At just 21, she has crafted a sound that weaves heartfelt, introspective lyrics with rich, layered instrumentals, creating a distinctive brand of woozy, reflective pop that shines with intimate moments. Deeply personal, her music is an exploration of the complexities of growing up, navigating relationships, and the fleeting nature of significant moments.

Following a period of ‘creative recalibration’, BEX made a significant impact in 2024 with the release of her single ‘Clearly’. The track resonated deeply with listeners, finding its way onto airwaves across New Zealand via stations like RDU, Radio Burgerfuel, and Radio Control, and securing a position on the coveted NZ Radioscope Alt Charts.

Now, BEX has taken her next bold step with the release of her new single, 'A New Title'. Released today, the track is a compelling mix of vivid lyrical imagery and warm, analogue-infused textures, cementing BEX as an artist whose evolving voice both demands and deserves your full attention.

Diving into the story behind 'A New Title', BEX shared that the track sprang from the early, often uncertain stages of a budding relationship, capturing that flowing, nervous energy where the anxiety of the unknown meets the exciting, unbounded potential that new love holds. Speaking further, she added, “I wanted to use metaphors of nature to mask a myriad of complex emotions and remove myself from overwhelming feelings of insecurity.”

The structure of the song reflects the internal push and pull between these feelings and worries. The contrast between the detailed verses, brimming with complex feelings, and the direct chorus hook – "I'm in my head again" – highlights the internal struggle between initial negative instincts and hopeful optimism. It’s a song underpinned by vulnerability and honesty, offering a cathartic release that flows through the uplifting yet simple instrumental and finds full resonance within each chorus.

True to her fondness for nostalgia, 'A New Title' is steeped in vintage sonic character. The track opens with a century-old piano, softened and textured by reel-to-reel tape, setting a warm, inviting scene. As the song progresses, "woozy guitars" treated with cassette processing weave through the rhythm section. The final mix is a rich tapestry featuring tight drums and a scattering of woodwinds, all brought together with a hi-fi polish by producer wongii (Caleb Wong) and mastered by Simon Lancelot. The production successfully blends modern clarity with analogue warmth, creating a lush and vibrant sound.

'A New Title' is available now and be sure to keep an eye on BEX's TikTok, Instagram, and Bandcamp pages for more exciting releases.
