Biffy Clyro are back, and their timing couldn't be better. Following the powerful return with their single 'A Little Love', the Scottish trio have officially announced their new album, 'Futique', set to drop on Friday, 26th September. The single, which premiered as Radio 1’s Hottest Record and quickly topped the UK’s Official Vinyl Singles Chart, has already set the stage for what promises to be another thought-provoking release from the festival mainstays.
'Futique' delves into profound themes, as explained by frontman Simon Neil: “‘Futique’ is an exploration of ideas, objects or relationships that exist across time - we are never aware when we do anything for the last time and there’s a beauty and sadness within that. What will be your ‘Futique’?” This concept, born from Neil's observations on how the digital age has reshaped our relationship with memory, is particularly intriguing. In a world where countless images and moments are instantly accessible on our phones, 'Futique' prompts us to consider not just what we miss from the past, but what we currently cherish that we might miss in the future.
This contemplation was further fuelled by Neil's experiences touring in 2023 with his extreme metal side project, Empire State Bastard. During this time, reflections on his journey with Biffy Clyro bandmates James and Ben Johnston came to the forefront. From their early days as 15-year-olds jamming Nirvana covers in a garage with humble aspirations, to commanding massive crowds at Reading and Download festivals, the band's shared history is rich with significant milestones and, crucially, the small, intimate moments that truly define their bond – the inside jokes, the long talks, and the profound silences.
Like any enduring partnership, the band has faced its share of challenges. Yet, through it all, they’ve recognised the importance of nurturing the deep affection that has kept them united. The narrative of "Biffy Clyro against the world" is a deeply personal one for them, but its core message resonates universally. It’s a powerful reminder for all of us, often caught in life’s relentless pace, to pause and truly appreciate the valuable connections and experiences we possess before they become part of our own 'Futique'.
Fans can already pre-order 'Futique' through various formats. A limited first pressing LP on recycled black vinyl, housed in a hand-stamped and hand-numbered white disco bag, is available for a brief 48-hour window. The band’s official store offers even more exclusive items, including a deluxe black and red corona vinyl with a signed print in a die-cut sleeve, a CD and zine package, and a red cassette. It seems Biffy Clyro are not just releasing an album, but inviting us to ponder our own relationship with time and memory.
