Boats Sails into Shotkickers to Unveil 'Bats of Mullumbimby' Live

Naarm-based multi-instrumentalist Blake Paterson, known for his captivating solo project Boats, is set to bring his acclaimed EP ‘Bats of Mullumbimby’ to the stage for a special live performance at Thornbury's Shotkickers on May 16th. This gig marks the first time the EP, released in mid-2024, will be performed in its entirety with a full band.

Boats' music is a compelling blend that defies easy categorisation. Paterson expertly weaves together the raw honesty of a singer-songwriter with expansive, almost cinematic arrangements. Hints of downtempo electronic textures surface within his deeply personal soundscapes, creating moments of striking emotional depth that resonate with listeners.

The seven tracks on ‘Bats of Mullumbimby’ are a direct reflection of a challenging period. The EP was conceived and recorded while Paterson was living in Mullumbimby, having relocated there to escape Melbourne's extensive lockdowns. During this time, the Northern Rivers region was hit by devastating floods, an event that profoundly influenced the EP's themes. ‘Bats of Mullumbimby’ explores ideas of renewal, resilience, and transformation in the wake of adversity, a sentiment that has clearly struck a chord, with the EP already accumulating over 100,000 streams on Spotify.

Bringing the EP to life with a full band is a significant step for Boats. Blake Paterson shared his enthusiasm, stating, "I’ve never had the full band experience when playing live. It’s exciting to finally have seriously good musos committed to bringing the songs forward." He also hinted at a prolific creative period, adding, "I’ve been constantly writing and have two albums I’m looking to release this year, one I finished in Bristol and the other in Oslo/Melbourne, but it’s time to perform, it’s all very motivating."

The evening at Shotkickers will feature support from DS Heavy and Twine (solo), promising a diverse line-up to complement Boats' evocative performance. Music fans can anticipate a memorable night as ‘Bats of Mullumbimby’ takes on a new dimension in a live setting.
