Melbourne's own emo pop-punk outfit, Cordiform, have burst onto the scene with their electrifying new single, 'So What!', which landed on June 5th. This track is a masterclass in blending raw emotion with an undeniable melodic punch, honed to perfection by producer Ionei Heckenberg, known for his work with bands like Ocean Sleeper and Behind Crimson Eyes. Get ready for a tune that’s as uplifting as it is defiant.
'So What!' kicks off with an energetic hook that grabs you instantly, before settling into a clean, shimmering guitar line. This sets the stage for James Hibble’s ethereal vocals, which float in with a vulnerable calm. But don’t get too comfortable – the track soon explodes into a soaring, anthemic chorus, packed with urgency and feeling. Just when you think you’ve got it pegged, Liam Nolan steps in with a gritty, punk-infused verse, injecting a fresh burst of dynamism. The song then gracefully exits with a hopeful, uplifting outro, perfectly capturing that sweet release of moving forward and finding strength in change.
This isn’t just a catchy tune; it’s a powerful statement about resilience. 'So What!' perfectly encapsulates that emotional rollercoaster of being knocked down but refusing to stay there. It’s a rallying cry for anyone who’s faced adversity and chosen to stand tall. Through its soaring melodies and anthemic energy, the song channels the frustration, chaos, and ultimate empowerment that comes from staring hardship in the face and pushing through.
Liam Nolan shed some light on the track's origins: “[So What!] was one of the first songs we started working on after we released our debut EP - ‘Growth & Despair,’ in October 2023. The original idea was Tim Irwin’s (Drummer) really early in writing, always looking at it wondering how we would use it.It went through a lot of changes but the foundations were always linked back to the original demo. It took working with Heckenberg to really pull a chorus together that felt big enough to give the energy to the song we thought it deserved.”
Accompanying the single is a brilliant, whimsical music video, helmed by Jaydon Colvin and Ionei Heckenberg. The band puts their own playful spin on Fight Club, creating 'Cordi Club' – a light-hearted nod to how even the most mundane moments become special when shared with mates.
Nolan praised the collaborative spirit: “Working with [Jayden and Ionei] was so effortless. They really took our ideas and our lack of experience and really guided us through a massive day. They are so energetic and uptempo with their work and they really want you to walk away with the best product possible. It was something like 36c when we filmed that day and everyone was struggling under all the lights in the cramped spaces but they never showed it, even if we did.”
