Brisbane ‘cowpunk’ duo Wattmore, a project helmed by brothers Aiden and Kai, are back with a ripper new single, 'Romantic Side'. Released earlier this month, the new single is the first taste of their upcoming album, delivering a raw, rollicking anthem that fires against the often-filtered, swipe-driven world of modern romance.
Known for happily drifting between genres and styles, Wattmore is a band that refuses to be pigeonholed. Their sound is a potent brew of raw talent and timeless inspirations, mixing the heartfelt storytelling of country, the easy swagger of Americana, and a proper, gritty rockabilly edge to create something blissfully new. Think less polished pop and more an intimate confessional put to music.
'Romantic Side' sees the brothers team up once more with legendary songwriter Allan Caswell, with Lindsay Waddington at the helm with production at LWM House Studios. In true Wattmore form, the track strikes a fine balance, offering a witty, satirical look at the dating game while still hitting you with some vulnerable truth. It’s an emotionally charged track that sees elements of country and punk collide in perfect form, dishing out a scathing, but undeniably enjoyable cut.
As Allan shared, "Aiden and Kai are constantly pushing the envelope in terms of feel and style, and their musicality amazes me at times. Wattmore runs on energy and a refusal to accept things that irritate them … (like bigotry, stupidity and bullying) They are prepared to take on any style and any subject as long as it is cool and, above all, entertaining."
This isn’t polished pop-country, but the sound of two brothers, a busted-up heart, and a wingman called bourbon making their mark. It’s an anthem that takes aim at swiping right, while also paying homage to the golden age of romance, when love wasn’t found behind a cell phone screen.
