Meanjin-based singer-songwriter Jet Cameron has just released his poignant new single, 'You're Free Now', and it's a track that immediately captures your attention. Known for his compelling vocal delivery and heartfelt lyrics, the International Songwriting Competition finalist offers a moving musical journey with this latest offering.
The song gently begins with the sound of falling rain, setting a somewhat melancholic atmosphere before an acoustic guitar and a haunting, distant whistle weave their way in. This sparse, evocative opening paves the way for Jet's powerful voice and the deeply emotional narrative of the lyrics.
'You're Free Now' is a song written from a perspective of loss, specifically reflecting on the aftermath and the many questions that arise when someone is lost to suicide. It’s a raw and honest portrayal of the impact on those left behind.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Jet shared, "I wrote 'You’re Free Now' after hearing Jackie-O bravely open up about her personal struggles with mental health and addiction." He added, "It got me to thinking about all the challenges faced by not only the individuals, but also the families and communities affected by mental illness and addiction and in the unfortunate cases, suicide."
Despite the heavy subject matter, Jet aimed to instill a sense of hope within the song. He explained, "I wanted the song to carry a message of hope, offering encouragement for anyone struggling to reach out and seek support from loved ones."
This new single follows a period of growing recognition for the 17-year-old artist. A self-taught musician on both piano and guitar, Jet first gained prominence in 2022 by winning a school competition judged by Powderfinger's Darren Middleton with his debut song 'Realise'. Since then, he's been busy creating and releasing original music.
Earlier in 2024, Jet impressed on Australian Idol, becoming the youngest contestant to reach the Top 30. His audition even featured a surprise appearance from multi-platinum artist Sam Fischer, who joined him for a rendition of 'This City'. Fischer was clearly impressed, telling Jet, "Congratulations man, you sound so good!"
With 'You're Free Now' now available across all platforms and more music and live performances on the horizon, 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for Jet Cameron as he continues to establish himself as an exciting emerging talent both locally in Australia and on the international music scene.
