Nectar Woode is making waves, and her latest single, 'LOSE', is a vibrant testament to her evolving sound and journey of self-discovery. This track is a key highlight from her upcoming EP, 'it's like I never left', set to drop on 18th July. It’s clear from the outset that Nectar isn't just making music; she's weaving a narrative of identity and heritage.
'LOSE' burst into being during Nectar's inaugural trip to her father's homeland of Ghana earlier this year. This wasn’t just a holiday; it was a deeply transformative experience that instantly connected her with a new community and a wellspring of inspiration. The track itself is a fantastic blend of influences, drawing from the traditional sounds of Ebo Taylor while embracing the abstract genius of Ghanaian collective SuperJazzClub. As Nectar puts it, “I wanted the world to meet right in the middle, super care-free.”
Produced by the intoxicating SuperJazzClub, 'LOSE' is a joyful, groove-laden anthem celebrating self-belief and confidence. The single is even accompanied by a documentary video, capturing the magic of that first Ghanaian adventure – an adventure that profoundly shaped the subject matter and sonic landscape of the entire EP. 'it's like I never left' is a six-track celebration and examination of Nectar’s family and dual heritage, boasting additional production from the likes of Jordan Rakei and stunning visual creative direction from Marco Grey.
Nectar’s mesmerising live performances are already legendary, and she’s set to win evenmore hearts this weekend with her debut on Later with Jools Holland on 1st June, sharing the stage with Pulp. Keep an ear out for her performance of ‘Only Happen’, her first single of 2025 and a captivating collaboration with NZ/Australian jazz titan Jordan Rakei. This track, born from a conversation between the two artists about their mixed heritage, delves into the feeling of being misunderstood in society – only recognised in moments of adversity.
With 'it's like I never left', Nectar has truly explored her roots, and it’s no wonder Elton John recently praised her, noting she “reminded him of Nina Simone” on his Rocket Hour show. While comparisons to greats like Lauryn Hill and Lianne La Havas are often made, Nectar Woode’s voice – both in its stunning tone and heartfelt intention – stands resoundingly on its own.
