A rapper, DJ, lyricist, record producer, and the proud founder of AK Productions, Deejay AK is a modern innovator with the Midas touch. After the recent success of tracks like 'Long Night', we sat down with the rising talent to find out where it all began and what's yet to come.
How did you first start making music? Where did it all begin?
"It all started at my friend’s music studio in 2014, when my friend wanted me to throw a few bars of rap on his new composition. After assisting a handful of small projects, I started making my own music in late 2014, Under my very own banner AK Productions. I am currently a freelance DJ and a music producer (Hip-Hop and EDM genres being my preference)."
How would you describe your sound?
"Blending elements of lounge, surf and sonic music, my music has always had 2 elements: ‘Energy pump’ and ‘emotional songwriting’ – well let’s say my music is a blend of David Guetta and Lana Del Rey."
What influences would you say best define your music?
"My music is widely influenced by the works of top artists such as Fatboy Slim, Don Diablo, David Guetta, Avicii, Alan Walker. Oh wait, this is just the other side of the coin. The real influence came from Ilayaraja, Mohd Rafi and AR Rahman (Indian composers). Right from the time I started enjoying music, these three Indian composers never failed to impress with their highly skilled compositions."
So, what's next?
"I am currently working on a couple of projects. We (my team and me at AK Productions) have completed the ‘groundwork’ for a mixtape and an ‘Indie’-genre lyrical song. I hope to have the mixtape released in early November 2019."
Who would your dream collaboration be with right now?
"I have always dreamt of collaborating with Blaaze (Indian Rapper), Lady Kash (Indian rapper), ADK (Srilankan rapper) and Sir Mix-a-lot (American Rapper)."
Tell us about your next release, what's the next big project for you and AK Productions?
"Our next project is about the rise of a youngster who faces a lot of turmoil in his/her everyday life. In a nutshell, the song is centered on the evil behind every person’s emotions."
How does it all come together - what's your typical songwriting process?
"I first think and make the concept/theme clear. Then I pen down my personal experiences around the theme. This gives more soul to the lyrics that comes up. Then I compose the BGM carefully, watchful of the emotional heaviness. For example, a sad song would require more use of violin strings, as it brings out the darker, stationary, heavier side of emotions. And further stages of composing follow."
What’s the most important thing for you when you’re writing a song?
"Lyrics and the BGM. I try to connect the situation and requirement with my personal experiences. It gives a more personal touch to my work."
Finally, what advice would you give to artists like yourself who are looking to make their mark on the industry?
"Effort and knowledge. Keep learning something new every single day. Put in your best effort and dedication, you are sure to be noticed!"
