Inspired by a string of intense nights out and his triumphant tour through Europe, Sweden’s own musical rebel and ‘Gay Hip-Hop’ pioneer Boris Jelic is back with a brand new single. Titled ‘Queen of Self-Destruction’, the new single is Boris’ first release since his debut album ‘Do Or Die’ dropped in October 2018, and it marks a far more personal and expressive approach to his pop-inspired sound.
Building on the visceral electronic-infused sounds of his album, ‘Queen OF Self-Destruction’ flows with a far darker energy, emphasising the internal struggles and defining moments that build the song. Lyrically and spiritually, it’s a far more introspective piece, and Boris pulls no punches in addressing his doubts and struggles, unleashing an intimate portrait of his life outside the spotlight.
Musically, the track is just as involving, opening with a string of solitary piano keys that illuminate the dark atmospherics, the single builds a false sense of calm before launching into a Boris’ unmistakable hip-hop heavy sound. Verses flow and hit hard while classic hip-hop beats surge forward, crashing against the rising electronic elements to create a fearless cacophony of tempered sounds.
Standing tall as a prime example of his own ‘Gay Hip-Hop’ genre, the new single blends masculinity with femininity, cutting through the black and white labels to create something more. A disarming and relatable insight into being in denial and being your own worst enemy, Boris released ‘Queen of Self-Destruction’ in the hope that it might help others who are dealing with the same issues, and as the track continues to set fire to airwaves across the globe, it's easy to see it becoming a modern cult classic.
