Review: Estelle California – ‘My Name Is Freedom’

A French-born singer-songwriter who began playing the piano at the tender age of five, Estelle California has dedicated her life to music. Growing up amongst physical and mental abuse and lived in an environment where she saw many people being discriminated against, Estelle relied on music to triumph over her adversities, eventually finding her way to South Africa, and then Oakland, California in 2013 where she finally found peace. Drawn in by the sense of respect and community, Estelle quickly fell in love with The Golden State, adopting its lineage as her own and changing her artist name to match.

As an artist, Estelle has constantly drawn from her own experiences, bringing to the fore an overall message of empowerment and hope. In her latest release, the hugely anticipated ‘My Name Is Freedom’ EP, Estelle has created a fully-realised and unapologetic vision of happiness, confidence, and ensuing pleasure, tying together her life, loves, and musical training to create something of infinite beauty.

A six-track release, ‘My Name Is Freedom’ cuts an incandescent path through the current musical landscape with hard-hitting, socially-conscious pieces that are wonderfully relatable. Opening with the brilliant battle cry of ‘Star, the EP takes an instant and irrepressible stance, delving deep into the nature of humanity, the lines the divide us, and the struggles we all fight against. It’s deeply personal and unmistakable honest, and all the better for it.

Tracks like ‘Who Are You’ and ‘Black Is The True Light’ hinge upon heavy emotion and vivid imagery, twisting and turning amongst catchy melodies and undeniable rhythms to create their orchestrated sound. Lyrically, it’s songs like ‘The Land of Freedom’ that shine, showcasing a nuanced ability to capture the breadth of our complex emotions.

Passionate and steeped in wonderfully human moments, ‘My Name Is Freedom’ is a magical release that fully encompasses the human condition, exploring our own morality and humanity with breathtaking boldness. Backed by polished production, textured instrumentals, and dazzling artistry, this EP goes a long way to prove that Estelle is the artist the world has been waiting.

Score: 8.5/10
