Born Matthew Brian Fleishman in Manhasset, New York, the rapper known as Format has had an impressive and multi-faceted career so far. A musician since the early age of eight when he first began piano lessons, Format went on to teach himself a slew of classic rock tracks and contemporary hip-hop anthems. It was the beginning of a love affair with music that would continue to the present day, lasting through highs and lows, and resulting a stream of singles released through Bentley Records.
After a baseball career with the Long Island Ducks, Format returned to music, focusing on the piano and revitalising his rap talents. Throughout 2016 he began to produce music, an after a year refining his sound, he wrote his first complete song, the SoundCloud hit ‘Jungle’. It was a track that caught the attention of Bentley Records, and throughout the year he went on to release five visceral tracks, including ‘No Entry’, a track that’s gone on to earn over 20,000 streams on Spotify.
Although his contract with Bentley Records has ended, the power of ‘No Entry’ still lingers. Arriving with a polished production and rampant energy, ‘No Entry’ is a powerful showcase of Format’s talents. It’s a modern rap track built on an unrelenting confidence that rises from a semi-chanted opening refrain that quickly becomes the chorus. Through a layer of paced beats and flickering percussion Format cries out with a believable bravado, “I am gonna be anything that I just wanna be / And there’s no stopping me for that I’m up on it see”, pushing the song forward from the very start with an immutable energy.
There’s a sense of drama and anticipation built into each of the track’s beats, creating an atmosphere that Format revels in, rapping at high tempo with an organic flow and relaxed flair. ‘No Entry’ is the kind of track that can make an artist, and Fleishman hits it out the park with a casual air that proves his power and talent tenfold.
One of the true landmark moments from his time with Bentley Records, ‘No Entry’ is a track that will last his career and continue to impress. It’s a track that defines the ‘Format sound’, and with his time away from the spotlight nearing an end, we can’t wait for the release of his debut EP, ‘Reformatted’.
‘No Entry’ is available now on Spotify and iTunes.
