Review: Gemtarra – ‘Fired Up’

A Philadelphia-based band on the rise, Gemtarra formed in 2018 as the creative brainchild of two sisters Gina and Tina Cieri, and in their few years together, they’ve made up a lot of ground. Deriving their name from two Italian words, ‘Gemilli’ meaning twins and ‘Chitarra’ meaning guitar, the sisters pushed their musical aspirations to the very forefront of the underground scene. Joined by Bryan Feddish on bass, Sunny Dee on drums, and Tawana Simons on percussion, Gemterra took flight, launching themselves firmly into the public consciousness with two dynamic singles, ‘Fire Me Up’ and ‘Jealous Heart’.

Building on the moment of these two mighty releases, the band have now proudly unleashed their debut EP ‘Fired Up’ on to the world, lashing out with force and uncompromising style. A rapid-fire release of four visceral cuts, bolstering the band’s two previous singles with two original pieces in the form of ‘Madness’ and ‘In Your Own World’.

A telling and straight-shooting epic, ‘Fired Up’ is rock ‘n’ roll in it’s purest form, free of unnecessary auto-tune, hollow thrills, and garish production. Nuanced and wonderfully authentic, the band’s previous singles shine with the same force and impact as when they were first released, refusing to quieten down or be tarnished by their enduring presence. Adding weight and increasing intrigue to the mix, new cuts ‘Madness’ and ‘In Your Own World’ shines with a cultivated sense of atmosphere and weight, offering dark, rolling melodies and lustrous, evocative vocals that perfectly match the pace of the instrumentals.

As a singular release, it’s hard not to be impressed by the size and scale of ‘Fired Up’, and while it might only bring four tracks to the threshold, each one is a confident and thought-provoking look into the heart of the band. A powerful introduction and a stellar overall release, ‘Fired Up’ is a debut release that simply demands to be heard.

Score: 8.5/10
