Review: Marquette King – ‘This Side’

A self-proclaimed ‘pop-hop’ artist from the sun-kissed Arizona streets, Marquette King has always held firm to his passion for making music. While his sports career may have momentarily stolen his focus, playing as an NFL punter for the Oakland Raiders and later the Denver Broncos, his will to create music was never far away, and while taking time off due to an injury, he reconnected with his musical aspirations.

Throughout 2019 Marquette released an almost unstoppable slew of hit singles, forging the first few steps in his blossoming legacy. Now firmly in his element, Marquette has started 2020 off in pristine form, releasing new single ‘This Side’ as a forerunner for his upcoming project, ‘Past You’.

A near-perfect blend of hip-hop and unapologetic pop, ‘This Side’ comes complete with polished hooks, a dynamic shifting melody, and some of the most impressive production you’ll hear all year. A deft collaboration featuring the talents of young star Annabelle, it’s a masterclass in lyrical precision and vocal prowess, as well as a true illustration of their combined and individual talents.

An unmistakable anthem that will surely become on of this year’s most beloved pop-rap hybrids, ‘This Side’ is catchy, kinetic, and wonderfully fresh, ensuring that it’ll be stuck in your head for days to come.

You can stream ‘This Side’ above via Spotify, or give it a spin over on Apple Music.

Score: 8.5/10
