An enduring legend of the original punk scene, Patrick Goddard music was always inspired by frantic, flourishing underground scenes of the '70s and '80s. Breaking away from the brash energy of those early years, Patrick made his name playing in several throughout '89 and '97, moving from Santa Cruz to San Francisco, and leading him to release an acclaimed solo record in '94. After the decline of his other bands and a few years away from music to focus on his family, Patrick returning to the scene in blazing form, forming a new band and playing extensively throughout Southern California.
Continuing his solo career with an acoustic EP in 2019 and a two further EP's in 2018, Patrick set the stage perfectly for his latest single, and the inaugural release from Lung Records, ‘Apparition'. Produced and engineered by Raymond Richards and recorded in Portland, the new single is a deft exploratory piece, bringing together Patrick's years of songwriting experience and punk rock aesthetic with a newfound will to experiment.
Arriving on an immediate wave a brass, ‘Apparition' brings a more mature, post-punk sound to the fore, laying aside distorted guitars and frenetic energy for a more funk-laden sound, the title track is an explosive ode to subtle ska sounds emotive, calling vocals. Taking these influences a step further and brushing up close to stark reggae sounds, ‘Hollow Home' blossoms from a rapid percussive burst and a slower, more emotive central melody. Bringing the single to a close with a more haunting, textured sound is ‘Hollow Dub', a reverb-drenched reworking of the preceding track that completely transforms the vibe.
An impressive release from start to finish, ‘Apparition' is the continuation of a legacy for Patrick and the beginning on one for Lung Records, making it a landmark release on two distinct fronts. Available now on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Music, as well as on limited edition white vinyl from Lung Records, ‘Apparition' is a single that is not to be missed.
