Review: Ramsey – ‘The Art of Survival’

A young and talented multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer, Ramsey is a rare and wonderfully powerful new voice in music. Based in the creative heart of L.A., Ramsey has recently her highly anticipated new album, ‘The Art of Survival’, a sweeping and unstoppable sonic force that is packed full of grand, cinematic masterpieces.

A collection of nine-distinct cuts, ‘The Art of Survivals’ take lead from Ramsey’s eponymous debut, a 2017 release which instantly pushed the young artists into the spotlight. Featuring the likes of ‘Love Surrounds You’, a contemporary anthem that has been recently featured in both film and television, the EP set the stage for ‘The Art of Survival’ in spectacular fashion, and now that it’s out, it’s clear to see that Ramsey hasn’t disappointed.

A titanic release of subtle, introspective lyrics and lavish pop-infused melodies, the spirit of the album is perfectly captured on ‘DarkSide’, a shimmering, energetic piece that rolls with a nuanced and perfectly irresistible sound. Throughout the album, there is a tapered balance between dark atmospherics and ethereal, almost dream-like rhythms, creating a sound that seamlessly transitions from eclipsing spirals to soaring, sonic assaults, particularly in songs such as ‘Ugly When I’m Honest’ and ‘Red Light’.

It’s an evolved and refreshingly off-beat sound, one that navigates modern pop clichés and more tactile production to produce something of real character and substance. Adding her own twist to modern music, ‘The Art of Survival’ is the perfect illustration of Ramsey’s dark and increasingly eerie sounds, offering an unadulterated look into the raw and gritty underbelly of her life and talent.

Score: 8.5/10
