Review: V12 – ‘What You Need’

Hailing from Boca Raton, FL, V12 is a rapper on the verge of greatness. Currently based in Las Vegas, V12 first found his flow as part of a music group when he was just a teenager, cutting his teeth and refining his style among like-minded musicians. After the group broke up, V12 took a nine-year hiatus from music, but now he’s back, and ready to showcase his more mature sound.

His debut solo project, V12’s new release is ‘The Commission’, an upcoming collection of tracks that is set to put his name back on the musical map. While the full details are still somewhat under wraps, V12 has released the first single from the album, the ambitiously titled ‘What You Need’. A single that looks to set the tone for the ‘The Commission’, ‘What You Need’ is a mix of soulful, irresistible choruses and persuasive rap verse, all brought together with a dizzying array of soft, digital beats.

Lyrically, V12 shines for the majority of the song, bringing together emotional reach with clever lyrical interplay to create a song that isn’t just your typical rap anthem. Looking past the line, “I keep you up like a belt baby”, each line of the track is built to conjure with real emotive power, and its easy to hear the authenticity in both V12’s lyrics and delivery. The rising, RnB choruses flow seamlessly from the verse, rising and falling with a natural, organic feeling that amplifies just how catchy the hook is.

An unexpected triumph, it’s easy to find both depth, emotion, and entertainment in ‘What You Need’, which is a rare thing in the rap game these days.

Score: 8/10
