Review: YT – ‘Into The D.A.R.K.NESS’

Austin Arndt, better known by his stage YT is a bold new talent in the rap scene that has been able to set himself apart from the crowd. A rapper, producer, sound engineer and entrepreneur, YT has risen from the depths of addiction to make his own brand of recovery music, channelling his creativity to help himself and others cope.

After a triumphant national tour with the likes of Scum, Rozz Dyliams, Nyro The Madman, and Opie Hallogen, YT went back to the studio and laid the foundation for what would become his landmark sophomore album, ‘Into The D.A.R.K.NESS’.

Carving a dynamic and constantly shifting balance of expressive vocals, introspective lyrics, and powerful, sculpted soundscapes, ‘‘Into The D.A.R.K.NESS’ is a deep and engaging experience, one that won't be forgotten anytime soon. Opening cut ‘T-Rex’ hits with a predatory step, kicking off proceedings with a heavy and purposeful grind. Confidence flairs whenever his lyrics hit, and it quickly becomes impossible to stand in the way of ‘Dark Deals’ and ‘Marvin’, two of the album’s most intense and expressive cuts.

Highlights about as ‘Boogieman’, Manical Pain’, and ‘Like A Track Fiend’ emerge from the shifting darkness, lending their weight to the album and ensuring that YT’s talents are heard. From mellow rhythms with dark underpinnings to near faultless verse and relentless flows, YT’s new album seems to have it all. Grounded in authenticity and built to inspire, it’s a deft blend of old school craft and new age energy.

Score: 8/10
