Special Feature: Rowland Sutherland – The Pentangle’s 'Basket of Light’

A talented musician who is widely regarded as one of the finest and most versatile flautists in Britain, Rowland Sutherland has performed and toured relentlessly, spreading his versatile melodies across the country and beyond, while also recording an impressive and enduring back-catalogue of releases. By trade, Rowland is an accomplished flautist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator, and his work is an undisputed testament to his talents and work with ensembles, bands, orchestras, and as a solo performer.

The latest in a long line of accomplishments, Rowland has been granted the honour of performing at this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, presenting his contemporary jazz interpretation of Pentangle’s 1969 iconic album ‘Basket of Light’ in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its release.

A landmark release, Pentangle, a group of virtuoso musicians including guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn with Danny Thompson and Terry Cox on double bass and drums and singer Jacqui McShee, released their third album Basket of Light in the Autumn of 1969, setting a precedent that is still being felt and celebrated today. The album captured their blend of traditional folk with jazz swing, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, bringing to light a timeless sound.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Rowland is bringing together a group of top UK jazz players to realise his vision for ‘Basket of Light’, creating a modern ode to its potent fusion of jazz and folk. Featuring the talents of Mae McKenna, John Parricelli, Phil Dawson, Alec Dankworth, Ansuman Biswas, and Rod Youngs, it promises to be a night to remember for casual and die-hard jazz folk and world music fans alike.

Set to take place on Sunday, the 24th of November as part of the celebrated EFG London Jazz Festival, tickets are online sale now. Click here to grab yours today, or scroll through the offical website for the festival above.
