In this exclusive interview, Javier opens up about his new project ‘The Road Less Traveled’, along with his fascinating start in music, and the artists and experiences that have shaped his distinctive sound.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today, Javier. You’ve had an impressive career in music so far, but where did it all begin?

“I started making music at a very young age, inspired by the music constantly around me and a deep curiosity to blend it with sounds from around the world, particularly from Africa and India. Even before I could travel, music was my way of exploring new places and cultures—it was an early passport to the world for me.”

You’ve dropped a few hints about a new project being in the works. Can you tell us a bit about what we can expect?

“’The Road Less Traveled’ is both the title track and inspiration behind my new album, drawing from Robert Frost’s poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. The song—and the album as a whole—is about those pivotal moments when we choose our own path, even if it means stepping into the unknown. This piece was commissioned by the Oakland Poetry Society, and I’m excited to premiere it at the St Pancras Clocktower in London on June 6th. It’s really about celebrating the courage to make our own choices, wherever they might lead us.”

Are there any artists, moments, or experiences that influenced you when writing the release?

“What has influenced me the most are people and travelling—both have played huge roles in my life. I’ve been fortunate enough to play in some of the most remote places and collaborate with incredible musicians across nearly every continent, including artists like Ravi Shankar, Santana, Herbie Hancock, and the Touré family. All these experiences—musical and otherwise—have shaped who I am. I can’t separate my music from all this physical and metaphorical travel around the world; it’s at the heart of everything I create.”

How would you describe the sound on the new project? And did taking lead from the poem influence your approach?

“The sound on my latest release is intimate and minimalistic, focusing on a stripped-back piano to reveal the beauty in simplicity. Over the years, I’ve moved toward this more refined, contemplative approach—it feels like taking one of Robert Frost’s quiet, winding paths through the woods, searching for meaning in the gentle details. There’s a sense of calm and space in the music, inviting listeners to pause and reflect, much like Frost encouraged with his poetry.”

Is there a central message or theme you were trying to convey in your latest release? Is there a moment in the release that really captures that idea?

“For me, music is a manifestation of life—it mirrors our own process of growing as human beings. It often starts with a simple idea, like a seed, and then develops in different ways: sometimes unpredictable, sometimes mysterious, and sometimes even unknown to me. I think that sense of discovery and transformation really comes through in the album, inviting listeners to follow the journey wherever it leads.”

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?

“Looking ahead, my greatest aspiration is to keep exploring and growing—both musically and personally—while connecting with people from different backgrounds through my work. I hope to keep collaborating across cultures, discovering new sounds, and finding fresh inspiration through travel and human connection. Ultimately, I want my music to bring listeners a sense of curiosity, openness, and reflection, inviting them to embark on their own journeys, wherever they may lead.”

What's next after this release? Do you have any new releases or shows on the horizon?

“I continue to perform a steady number of concerts around the world, and I’m always excited to share my music with new audiences. For updates on upcoming shows and future releases, I invite everyone to visit my website at www.javierrodriguez.org.”

15. Is there anything you would like to say to our audience? How can they connect with you and help support you?

“I’d just like to thank everyone for their interest and support. The best way you can connect with me is by listening to the music, sharing it with others, and giving your feedback and support through social media. Your engagement means a lot and helps the music reach even more people around the world.”

In closing our conversation, Javier leaves us with a thoughtful reflection on his artistic journey and a warm invitation to connect with his music. His dedication to exploring new sonic landscapes and fostering connections through his art is truly inspiring.
