Steven Binko is a proper creative whirlwind. With a CV that boasts everything from pioneering interactive reality TV to penning books and designing shoes, he’s a multifaceted artist who has never been afraid to try something new. Now, he's back doing what fuels his soul: making music. His latest offering, ‘Lungs of a Legend’, isn't just a song; it's an anthem of resilience, a bold statement about finding your voice even when the world tries to hush you.
Recently, we were lucky enough to speak with Steven about the new single, digging into his early days of experimentation to his current sound and his journey of self-discovery through music.
It’s great to chat with you today, Steven. Thank you for taking the time out. Let’s go right back - when did you first start making music? Where did it all begin?
“I’ve been writing and recording music since the early 2000s, but I’ll be honest — a lot of that early stuff is pretty cringe to me now. I think for a long time, I was just chasing the idea of being a performer, without really understanding the purpose behind why I was making music. That changed when life kind of forced me to sit with myself. I was isolated, going through some really dark times, and didn’t have much of a support system. Music became the only outlet I had to express how I was feeling — and in doing that, I started making things that felt real. Raw. Honest. I stopped trying to ‘fit’ and just started saying what I needed to say.”
“Now, I’m not trying to make what’s trendy. I’m making what speaks to me. I think that’s why a lot of my recent stuff leans into that anthem-style vibe — because it’s all about surviving, reclaiming yourself, and encouraging other people to do the same.”
The new single has really captured something special. What was your songwriting process for the release? How did it all come together?
“When I sat down to write ‘Lungs of a Legend’, I had one very specific goal in mind: I wanted to create a karaoke anthem. Not just a catchy song — but something people would belt out in bars, that strangers might scream along to by the second chorus. That’s why I also released a karaoke version on YouTube — I want to see people bring it to life in their own way. I’ve always loved how alive people get when the right song hits — the way it becomes less about the artist and more about the moment. I wanted to create something that lived in that space. A song that’s not just performed, but felt, shared, and shouted back by a crowd that gets it.”
“At first, I imagined it as a country song — something like ‘Before He Cheats’ by Carrie Underwood. That punchy, sing-your-heart-out energy was what I was chasing. You can still hear that influence, but once I got into the melodies and vocal delivery, it started leaning into rock — gritty, bold, a little messy in the best way. I stopped trying to sound clean or trendy, and just sang in a way that felt natural to my voice and what I was trying to say. And that opened something up for me — I started hitting notes I used to avoid. Notes that felt too raw, too loud, too exposed. But they made sense. They told the story. For the first time, I wasn’t trying to fit into a sound — I was letting my voice lead it.”
“The Band Version was built around that spirit — recorded in two vocal takes, live instrumentation, minimal editing. I wanted people to hear the cracks, the breath, the fight. Jasmin Mišić, who produced it, brought this amazing live energy to it — you can tell he’s a composer first. The Dance Version, produced by Calibeats, brought something totally different but equally powerful — it’s clean, punchy, and just hits you in all the right ways. Both versions hit different, but they share the same heart. What started as a fun creative challenge turned into something much more personal. This track became a reminder of why I make music at all — not to chase perfection, but to chase truth. And that freedom? That’s the most powerful note of all.”
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?
“I’d love to create moments where a crowd sings my lyrics back to me. I did a series of pop-up performances where I covered songs like ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘I Love Rock and Roll’, and the energy was electric — I want that again, but with my songs. Even if it’s just 50 people in a basement who know every word — that intimacy is powerful. I’m chasing real connection, not clout. Also, I’m itching for a redemption moment after totally butchering the national anthem at a hockey game, so I’d love a second shot at that.”
“Performing at a festival or sports halftime would be amazing. And I’d love to get on Kesha’s radar — she’s launching her own label, and I admire her fearless creativity. She’s a rebel in the best way, and I’d love to be part of what she’s building. And I’ve got a track called Warrior that I’m determined to license for a sports or empowerment-themed project. That one’s close to my heart — fingers crossed it finds the right home. I’ve written close to 100 songs in the last few years, and slowly but surely, I’m bringing them to life”
“One I’m really excited about is called ‘Numb’ — it’s my first true ballad, and it’s incredibly vulnerable. I’ve been working with Calibeats on that one too — he’s helped me shape not just the sound, but my confidence as an artist. We’re also reworking one of my earlier songs, Bow Down, to better match who I am now — with more grit, more soul, more me. Right now, I’m focused on building a body of work that feels honest, timeless, and unapologetically mine. No gimmicks, just heart.”
Is there anything you would like to say to our audience? How can they connect with you and help support you?
“I’d just say — if you connect with this song in any way (or know someone who would), show it some love. Whether that’s tagging me in a karaoke video, creating a TikTok dance, or just sharing the track with a friend… it all matters more than people realise. In today’s world, the hardest part about being an independent artist isn’t making the music — it’s getting people to hear it. Algorithms don’t work in our favour unless people are actively sharing and engaging. Likes are nice, but shares are what create discovery.”
“That’s how someone finds your music, dives deeper into your catalogue, and maybe even becomes part of your creative journey. There’s so much more that goes into a release than just the song — registrations, visual content, mixing, strategy, the emotional toll of putting something personal out there. Every project is a piece of me. And seeing people champion it? That’s the most rewarding thing. So if this track hits you in the heart, the hips, or the lungs — I’d love to see how you bring it to life. Let’s build something together.”
