Naarm's very own singer-songwriter Hassall is at it again, dropping another tantalising taste of her forthcoming debut album, 'Means More To Me Than It Does To You', with the release of 'Overpopulater'. Due to hit our ears on July 3rd, the LP is shaping up to be a defining moment for an artist who's been steadily captivating audiences since her 2021 debut.
Following on from the infectious grooves of ‘Dinner Table’, 'Boss Level Shit' and 'Tracey Grimshaw', 'Overpopulater' pulls listeners deeper into the intricate soundscapes and sharp lyricism that are Hassall’s signature. She masterfully layers deeply personal narratives with refreshingly honest takes on life, carving out a distinct space in the Aussie music scene. Much like the beloved storytelling of Courtney Barnett and Angie McMahon, Hassall’s unique vocal delivery and lyrical flair make her music instantly recognisable and utterly compelling.
Speaking about the new track, Hassall explains: “‘Overpopulater’ is for anyone who, like me: a) drinks too much coffee and b) can’t decide whether they want kids or not (due to environmental reasons, of course), and c) is head over heels in love with at least one person 24/7. I’ve been playing ‘Overpopulater’ live for a while now, and it always seems to be one the audience remembers. I think that’s credited to its relatability for a twenty-something (particularly one who lives within a 25km radius of Melbourne city. See: left-wing coffee addicts), and also the fact that this may be my only song that you can dance to for the entire duration of the song.”
Accompanying the single is a brand new music video, filmed by the talented Willem Kingma (known for his work with Bones & Jones and The Grogans). Shot across various locations in the charming Victorian town of Colac, the visuals perfectly capture the over-caffeinated energy of the song. Hassall fondly recalls her favourite part of the shoot: “My favourite part of the day was shooting at our friend Maggie’s house - it was a beautiful old house with feature pieces of furniture, and each room was painted a totally different colour, which made it ideal for filming.”
'Means More To Me Than It Does To You' promises to be a powerful arrival for Hassall, cementing her status as one of Naarm's most exciting and engaging musical talents. Get ready to have this one on repeat!
