An Atlanta-based artist and producer who first began by making beats on his laptop, A Broken System has become a mainstay of the independent circuit, experimenting freely with analogue samplers and synths to create a fierce cyberpunk sound. With influences ranging from Kanye West, Oneohtrix Point Never, JPEGMAFIA, Led Zeppelin and Daft Punk, his style looks towards new landscapes, delivering a new digital age that he delivers perfectly in his new album, ‘An Escape’.
After a successful debut with the release of ‘Lens Flare’ earlier this year, all eyes were firmly fixed upon A Broken System, and now that the album is finally here, it’s quickly become one of the most entrancing releases of the year. An expansive space-age journey wrapped in vintage synths and haunting reverb, ‘An Escape’ builds effortlessly on A Broken Systems’ tendency to push his sound in different directions, blending contemporary sounds with timeless musical spaces to create an acid-soaked, trip-hop infused odyssey.
With each track brimming with a unique character and energy, unlocking new faucets and avenues that drift and change as the sounds unfold, creating a sharp cyberpunk energy that stands against the mainstream. Immersive, exploratory, and utterly undeniable, ‘An Escape’ hits with a sense of fitting dystopian realism, capturing a cinematic sound that pays homage to his influences, while also allowing A Broken System to excel in his own right.
Speaking openly about the new album, A Broken System explained, “’An Escape’ is an amalgamation of influence from many different films, film scores, and video games. It is escapism in the internet age; urban spaces as well as nature and the environments I have moved between.”
A stunning, otherworldly mix of electronic, ambient, hip-hop, and synth-rock, ‘An Escape’ is a perfect introduction to the Minnesota producer, creating a totally unique and wonderfully explorative aural adventure that will reveal itself more with each and every listen.
Score: 8/10
