Bonneville, the purveyors of groovy retro-soul, are taking flight with their latest single, 'Flying Machine', the title track from their eagerly anticipated second album. Following their well-received self-titled debut, this new offering sees the band pushing their sonic boundaries, venturing into a more electronic funk realm while retaining the warm, analogue heart that has previously defined their sound.
Inspired by a simple moment when guitarist and co-producer Jeff Hayashi found his son staring up at the moon, 'Flying Machine' aims to tap into that sense of childlike wonder and fascination. Throughout the single, these funk-infused grooves take hold, wrapped carefully in airy, dream-like spaces purpose-built to ensnare and enchant.
Influences such as Jamiroquai, Cymande, and Stevie Wonder drift in and out, floating through the track seamlessly. But beneath the dance grooves, ‘Flying Machine’ also builds on the retro-soul style that Bonneville are known for. The track is awash with analogue warmth, balanced cleverly by touches of modern synths and MIDI flourishes that shine throughout.
Recorded at the iconic Muscle Shoals Recording Studios and produced by Starita, who aimed for a “classic-meets-the-future” vibe, ‘Flying Machine’ captures a poignant emotional moment and layers it perfectly with this vibrant, imaginative spirit.
With ‘Flying Machine’, Bonneville have crafted an immersive and multi-faceted song that truly shines. It’s a track you can feel, as well as hear, opening up new spaces and searching to unlock a long-lost sense of wonder. As bandmate and lead vocalist Wes McGee shared, “I hope listeners will see themselves as the ‘Flying Machine’ and know they can do anything.”
‘Flying Machine’ is the title track from Bonneville’s second album and sets the stage for the record perfectly. For more from the band, be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
