A band formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cassidy & TNGX are the perfect illustration of an ‘iso-project’. While the two artists have never met in person, they found a way to bridge the transnational gap between the US and Germany, stitching together songs from sound clips and poems that they sent across the divide. The first glimpse of their work together, the duo recently released their debut single ‘A Secret’, a strange, but wonderfully captivating cut that incessantly demands your attention.
A release that leans heavily on shifting textures and rising, ambient tones, ‘A Secret’ begins with a slow, melodic evolution, cutting through the silence with a layered array of bass tones and rolling atmospherics. It’s a dark, almost foreboding introduction that the pair dive into with reckless abandon, twisting their dark trap sound into an intoxicating and overarching melody.
As the vocals cut into view, Cassidy & TNGX’s lo-fi finds its form, layering haunting vocals and poetic lyrics with a dark wash trip-hop inspired rhythms. Build from scraps of synth-pop, contemporary indie, and sharp, melodic trap, the single shimmers and forces itself upon you, closing in from every angle and eclipsing any other sound. An undeniably lavish soundscape, there is a dark and unforgettable magic at work within ‘A Secret’, ensuring that if the music doesn’t move you, then the vocals or the lyrics definitely will.
It’s a rare thing, when artists to capture your attention so thoroughly that outside world fades away, but that’s just what Cassidy and TNGX have been able to achieve on their debut single. While slow, that moment where the song takes over is absolutely unavoidable and perfectly achieved, aging finely and never overstepping. A poetic and hauntingly beautiful soundscape, ‘A Secret’ is a journey that is definitely worth taking.
