Nature Loves Courage, a vibrant and creative collective forging their own path through the sonic wilderness, have delivered a captivating new single in ‘Pay Attention’. Emerging from a shared passion for pushing boundaries, Nature Loves Courage have been busily carving out a distinct niche in the crowded landscape of modern music, and the new single is the latest chapter in an ever-evolving journey.
Known for their hybrid sound of “post punk electro-funk-rock,” Nature Loves Courage revel in a style that is both familiar and strikingly fresh. Throughout, McKenna Rowe's ethereal synthesisers and cinematic arrangements intertwine seamlessly with the driving bass and rock-solid drumming of Jake Bergman and Garrett Smith. Joe De Sa's guitar adds a crucial layer, providing both texture and a melodic counterpoint.
In perfect form, ‘Pay Attention’ opens with an instantly ensnaring guitar line set against spacious tones that burst intermittently. There’s a subtle and building interplay that blossoms as Rowe’s vocals take hold. Arriving with an immediate impact, her sweet, clear voice cuts through the mix with passion. The opening lines, “Try to remember what drew you here: It’s a distant dream of a memory now. You’ve got to learn how to pay attention. Unlike the forgotten souls that have lost control,” paint a vivid picture of a world where focus and awareness are paramount, but slowly slipping out of view.
"‘Pay Attention’ is a great example of collaborative songwriting, fusing points of view from a guitar player and singer/songwriter/arranger,” Rowe shared about the track. “Working with another writer is still new to me, but I learn so much every time and especially appreciate how guitar can become more of a true voice of its own in a song.”
As the song builds, layers of glistening synths and shimmering guitar create a bright, uplifting soundscape. The interplay between the vocals and the lead guitar is particularly effective, creating a sense of dynamic tension and release.
While the track is undoubtedly vibrant and energetic, there's a subtle undercurrent of darkness in the lyrics, hinting at deeper themes of societal apathy and the importance of staying present. ‘Pay Attention’ stands as a vibrant snapshot of Nature Loves Courage’s ability to craft intricate and compelling songs that resonate within, adding introspection and heart to the hybrid-pop style.
