Magazine Gap – ‘Superficial'

Magazine Gap – ‘Superficial'

A band that we’ve been quietly watching for a while now, Magazine Gap have been carving their own path through the legendary London music scene since for a few years now. A powerhouse trio consisting of James Keen, Brian McCook, Alex Ho, the band have been teasing the release of their highly anticipated album, ‘What’s That About?’ for some time now, and now, with the release of penultimate single ‘Superficial’, they’ve come one triumphant step closer.

The penultimate instalment in a trilogy of songs written to complete the album and represent the latest evolution of the band’s sound, ‘Superficial’ offers a far more minimalist sound, breaking new ground with a nuanced electronic sound and heartfelt soul-pop sound. Inspired by the beauty in honesty and transparency within a relationship, the new single is an instantly recognisable slice of indie neo-soul that will have you yearning for more.

Built as a companion piece to previous single ‘For The Ride’, and with a video that was fittingly filmed at the same time, there is a sense of growing familiarity and romance surrounding ‘Superficial’. A testament to the songwriting abilities of the band, the single has a rare and confident aura that builds with each repeat listen. It’s an impressive feat, and it allows the song to create an expansive palette of sounds that is engaging, accessible, and deceptively sophisticated.

A truly universal piece, ‘Superficial’ never oversteps its bounds or over-stays its welcome, shifting its focus and vibrancy to reflect the changing motion and energy of the song. It’s wonderfully orchestrated with polished production and an undeniably authentic edge, weaving its tactile rhythms through your speakers and deep into heart and soul of everyone who hears it.

More than just a glistening and altogether timeless glimpse of what’s to come in the new album, ‘Superficial’ is a release that is strong enough to stand on its own, staying bravely in the spotlight and confidently leading the show.

You can stream ‘Superficial’ now alongside its official music video, and be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for the full release of ‘What’s That About’ later this year.

Score: 8/10
