Mundih – ‘Journey’

Mundih – ‘Journey’

Another of the great Icelandic musician that are currently bringing their emotive Nordic sound to the world, Mundih has been releasing a steady stream of impressive singles ever since he first made his mark with 2019’s ‘Little One’. Since then Mundih has not sat idle, writing and recording new songs, and constantly refining his evocative, alternative rock sound.

His latest release, ‘Journey’ arrives in the wake of ‘Stronger’, his collaborative coup de grâce with the brilliant Irisey. An emotive masterpiece, the music for ‘Journey’ was written during a reflective and isolated part of Mundih’s life, with each note forming to reflect the loneliness that Mundih was experiencing. While the tune was an immediate outlet, the words never quite formed, and the project was eventually shelved. In the months that followed, Mundih fell for two poems written by one of his dear friends, and he knew instantly that he had finally found the right words. It was this partnership between tone and lyric that made Mundih revisit the track, finally bringing it to life with the help of a wizard friend from Bakki Studios who brought an otherworldly atmosphere to the piece.

A slow-burning blend of dark orchestral arrangements and textured, ambient tones, ‘Journey’ finds itself washed in pure emotion, moving past the gossamer façade and cutting deep into the beating heart of the song. Lyrically, the song treads a similar path, wrapping esoteric verse and enduring poetics in an evocative spoken word reprise. As the track pushes on, a solitary and wonderfully unique guitar solo fights to the fore, offering a single, lingering refrain that invites self-reflection. It’s a simple, but powerful moment, showcasing one of many nuanced elements that help make ‘Journey’ an effective release.

It’s clear that ‘Journey’ has been built to perfectly reflect the weight and hardship that comes with depression, and at its very core it has a deeply moving sentiment, but it’s the final few seconds of the track that impressed us the most. In a brief, but powerful movement, Mundih brings hope and recovery to the closing moments of the release with a subtle rising refrain that speaks volumes.

A track that is not for the faint of heart or casual listener, ‘Journey’ is a mammoth undertaking for both listener and artist, and while not everyone will be able to relate or find the beauty in it, those that do will be all the better for it.
