Terry Blade – ‘The Unloveable’

  • 1 min read

One of Chicago’s rising, independent talents, Terry Blade has earmarked himself as a new breed of singer-songwriter. Armed with a deeply personal sound that takes lead from the likes of Tracy Chapman, Nina Simone, Radiohead, Phyllis Hyman, and Sarah Vaughn, Terry has recently risen to prominence on the back of his debut, acoustic demo, ‘The Unloveable’.

Produced by Ryini Beats and released exclusively on Soundcloud in the closing days of March this year, ‘The Unloveable’ is a song about living with depression, offering a personal insight into Terry’s struggles. Backed by stripped back instrumentals and a raw, organic sound, it’s an apologetically honest journey that holds firm to some true mainstream vibes.

Built through waves of minimalist RnB instrumentals, acoustic guitar, and melancholic vocals, ‘The Unlovable’ quickly becomes an emotive vehicle through which Terry can express and exhume his inner demons, bringing them boldly into the spotlight for the world to see. Perfectly paced and with a rare sense of honesty in each lyric, it’s easy to be charmed by Terry’s debut, and even easier to connect with it.

Despite the heavy message and lyrical content, ‘The Unloveable’ works so well because of the light, RnB tones that flicker and flow throughout, offering a universal sound that sets the stage for far deeper conversations. An impressive debut for sure, ‘The Unloveable’ is a refreshing hybrid between the acoustic and RnB worlds, creating an expansive and relatable new sound that the world can connect with.
