Philadelphia's DIY maestro, Jason McGovern, has graced us with a new single from his Americana folk and pop-rock project, The Describers. Titled 'Home On Time (Sunrise)', the new single dives headfirst into the equally pressing concerns of global catastrophe and the daily grind, all wrapped up in a package of thoughtful songwriting and impressive musicianship.
McGovern, who's been steering The Describers since 2018 after years of releasing music under his own name, has a knack for weaving together introspective folk with rootsy rock, colliding the genres and adding a neat touch of strident new wave. This latest offering is a prime example of his expansive approach, finding common ground between the grand scale of the apocalypse and the seemingly trivial frustration of double-parked cars. As McGovern himself puts it, "This truly was a fun songwriting challenge. Both in terms of narrative and structure, it really was a game of free association and escalation."
Musically, 'Home On Time (Sunrise)' is a potent blend. It kicks off with a burst of blues-infused rock, smoothly transitioning between sweeping melodic passages and anthemic, highly charged sections. The guitar work is a standout, propelling the track forward with a defiant charm, while the repeating chorus of "And I won't make it home on time" becomes an instantly memorable and oddly joyous hook.
Largely recorded and mixed by McGovern at his home studio, Eel Diner Jukebox, the track benefits from significant work at Retro City Studios with Matty Muir. The addition of Dr. Dog's Eric Slick on drums provides a solid, dynamic foundation, and the mastering by Ryan Schwabe, known for his work with acts like Beach Bunny and Hop Along, ensures a polished yet gritty sound that hits just right.
Speaking openly about the new single, McGovern shared, "When I was working on this track, I was on a big Mike Viola kick - particularly his ‘American Egypt’ and ‘Paul McCarthy’ records. I was totally inspired by how completely free he seems to be as a songwriter. Every line is a surprise, but every line leads into the next so organically. So this was really an attempt to get into that kind of mindset and let myself wander."
This sense of unbridled creativity certainly shines through, making 'Home On Time (Sunrise)' a compelling and genuinely fun listen. For more from The Describers, be sure to join them today on Facebook and Instagram.
