If you haven’t tuned into The Drood yet, you’ve well and truly been missing out. A talented duo from Denver, Colorado, The Drood has been making dark and dreamy electro-rock anthems for years now, dominating the local scene with an engaging hybrid sound that draws from a seemingly limitless musical scope. After making their mark in 2016 with the release of their acclaimed debut record, the duo of Nathan Jamiel and Daniel Watts has been high on our radar, and today, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on their latest brilliant single.
Titled ‘It Must Needs Wither’, the new cut is a perfect illustration of the band’s dynamic sound, delivering an energetic, tribal fusion of post-rock, psych, shoegaze, and industrial sounds that blend into a triumphant cacophony of post-electronic sound. Inspired by a lone from Othello, ‘It Must Needs Wither’ is a gorgeous aural effigy, one that hammers home just how much we’ve all endured since the recent pandemic and lockdowns began.
Offering an ethereal sound that brings comfort and serenity to the fore, the music within ‘It Must Needs Wither’ is a beautiful listening experience, building slowly and setting a platform where everyone can confront their demons with a devil-may-care attitude. Stylistically, it’s a wonderful move, and the heart and soul of the track spread to every note, creating a wonderfully heartfelt sound that is filled with warmth.
Speaking openly about the new single, the duo was eager to share their inspirations, explaining, “Inspired by Shakespeare's Othello and dedicated to the memory of all those we know who perished in the last couple of years. All parts were initially recorded in Lafayette, CO in September of 2021 as live, improvised takes. Post-production clean-up and punch-ins were added later but the core of this song is a captured ritual.”
Available now alongside the official music video which you can watch above, ‘It Must Needs Wither’ is a rare, intoxicating track that is utterly essential, now more than ever.
