The Drood – ‘Psychic Institute’

The Drood – ‘Psychic Institute’

A Denver duo with a penchant for blending psych-tinged, post-industrial tones with vibrant dance vibes, The Drood have spent the last few years delivering rare and intoxicating releases. After forming in 2012, of Nathan Jamiel and Daniel Watts have made their mark with a string of dark and dreamy electro-rock anthems, and after they blew us all away with the release of ‘It Must Needs Wither’ just a few months ago, we couldn’t wait to hear what they’d produce next.

Returning to the airwaves with a brilliant otherworldly sound, The Drood’s latest single is a protest against empty sentimentality, layering dark post-rock panache and free creative style in the fierce ‘Psychic Institute’. Armed with a kaleidoscopic blend of psychedelic, oscillating textures and shoegaze melodies, the new track is a masterclass in bold, enchanting sounds.

While the beats behind the melody bring all the energy that the track needs, the lyrics and vocals tap into a sense of modern-day ennui, calling out the world as it clings to empty sentimentality. Speaking about the new single, The Drood explained, “We didn't set out with the intention to write a dance song, but that's what came out! Psychic Institute unintentionally evolved into an homage to the industrial music which shaped our musical proclivities. The lyrical message, if any, is a cautionary tale about the emptiness and transparency of foolish sentimentality.”

A brilliant slice of dark music magic, the synths and vocals that surround ‘Psychic Institute’ make for an undeniable listening experience, offering a stark, early electronic feel that is perfectly balanced by the darker industrial tones.

Along with the new single, The Drood plan to release a string of new singles and music videos throughout 2022, which was recorded in the band’s studio in Lafayette, engineered by Nathan Jamiel and Daniel Watts, mixed by Daniel Watts and mastered by SoundLab in Portland.

Score: 8.5/10
