When we last heard from talented Icelandic singer-songwriter of Weekendson, he had aligned his talents with those of Irisey, a charming local singer who helped bring about the textured and wonderfully intimate ‘Stay’. It was a single that was both cathartic and romantic, speaking volumes to anyone who has suffered loss and tragedy in their lives and offering them an honest and open helping hand. Now, Weekendson and Irisey are back in the spotlight again, and this time they’ve brought even more friends and artists into the mix.
A truly collaborative release, ‘Friends’ was born from the combined hearts and minds of Weekendson and his friend Doddi, before being brought to life with the help of Irisey and Inger. When discussing the new single, both Weekendson and Doddi expressed the sentiment behind it, hoping that it would make people think about their friends, and that 2021 would become the year of friendship after all the turmoil of 2020. Arguably the first original track of 2021, released in the very first minute of the new year, ‘Friends’ is another beautifully honest and heart-warming single that shines a light for all the world to see.
Wrapped in golden strands of acoustic guitar and communal, choir-like vocals, ‘Friends’ starts humbly, laying down a textured, wandering melody that hangs in the air around you. As the song continues, the vocals cut in, filling the track with sounds of kinship, gratitude and love as Weekendson and Doddi shape the song into an evocative tapestry of shifting instrumentals and gorgeous, sentimental sounds. It’s a subtle, but nevertheless impressive sounds that the pair create, putting passion and unapologetic openness above the bold mainstream flourishes.
Saving the best for last, the final minute of ‘Friends’ is a perfectly placed crescendo that delves into cinematic alt-rock sounds like only Weekendson knows how to create. Like a breaking wave, the song takes you away, and if you’re not moved by the end of its four-and-a-half-minute run, then you just haven’t been paying enough attention.
Available now on Spotify, and alongside the touching music video above, ‘Friends’ is another touching track that speaks volumes for the talent and friendship shared by both Weekendson and Doddi.
While arguably not as direct or pronounced as some of Weekendson’s earlier singles, ‘Friends’ works because of the emotional nature of the piece, cutting through the superficial overtones of everyday life and reminding us what really matters in times like this; our friends, our family, and that all-important human connection.
