Dustyn's 'Right Where You Are' Delivers A Technicolour Journey of Love

In a fusion of vintage and modern sounds, Adelaide artist Dustyn has unveiled 'Right Where You Are', a single that marks the launch of his eagerly anticipated debut EP, 'Midnight Movements'. Released last Friday, this track is a breathtaking blend of lo-fi soul and cinematic string arrangements, creating an auditory landscape that is both intimate and expansive.

'Right Where You Are' is a deeply personal exploration of the vulnerability that comes with loving deeply, and the beautiful, terrifying belief that those feelings are returned. Dustyn's lyrics paint a vivid picture of this emotional landscape, enhanced by his rich, atmospheric production that captures the surreal yet brilliant essence of love.

The song's unique sonic direction was inspired by a childhood memory. "I was inspired by the moment in Wizard of Oz where Dorothy steps into munchkin land for the first time," Dustyn explains. He sought to emulate the vocal arrangement that accompanies this scene, "where the vocals move like the wind, alluding to melodies from the rest of the soundtrack." This is reflected in the build-up to the final chorus, where Dustyn's layered vocals create a similar sense of technicolour wonder.

Composed late one night on piano, 'Right Where You Are' showcases a new facet of Dustyn's songwriting prowess, contrasting his previous work as the guitarist and frontman of the blues-rock band WANDERERS. The track features lush string arrangements by Ross Irwin, renowned for his work with Cat Empire and The Bamboos, adding a distinct texture to the composition. Grammy-winning producer Francois Tetaz (Gotye, Kimbra) lent his touch to the mix, creating a cinematic depth that lets each note resonate with emotional weight.

'Right Where You Are' is the first offering from Dustyn's solo project and sets the stage for the 'Midnight Movements' EP, a body of work that promises introspection and emotional depth. Dustyn's distinctive talent for genre-blending and his ability to conjure profound emotional responses are on full display, setting a new standard for his evolving artistry. As the first step into this new chapter, 'Right Where You Are' leaves listeners eager to explore the rest of the technicolour world Dustyn is creating.
