Grace Clark Finds Herself Adrift in Dreamy New Single, 'Chicago'

Grace Clark's latest release, 'Chicago', is a wistful exploration of displacement and longing. The track, recorded in Montreal and produced by Lila McKechnie and Siji Olunuga, showcases a sonic maturity in Clark's artistry. With gentle piano chords, dreamy pedal steel (courtesy of Hayden Nolan), and Clark's signature sweet harmonies, 'Chicago' crafts a soundscape that perfectly mirrors the emotional turmoil of navigating a new city and yearning for connection.

The song was born out of a conversation with a friend about their long-distance relationship with a girl in Chicago. Clark, who grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, channelled her own experiences of feeling adrift in the urban sprawl. "The song lyrics came from feeling out of place in a big city, and the chaos that comes with that," she explains. This sense of chaos is vividly rendered in lyrics that speak of late nights and misadventures.

But 'Chicago' is more than just a tale of big-city woes. It's a poignant reflection on the universal longing for something just out of reach, whether it's the familiarity of home or a healthy relationship. The track beautifully captures the tension between the excitement of new beginnings and the pull of the past, a duality that many listeners will undoubtedly relate to.

Clark's northern roots subtly inform the track's ethereal quality. Having grown up "on the edge of the Arctic Circle," her music often draws inspiration from the stark beauty and cyclical nature of her environment. This influence is evident in the song's evocative imagery and introspective lyrics.

'Chicago' is accompanied by striking cover art, drawn by Clark herself in her hometown of Yellowknife. The artwork, with its intertwining paths, visually represents the song's themes of interconnectedness and the divergent journeys life can take us on.

With the new single, Grace Clark delivers a captivating blend of indie pop and heartfelt storytelling. The single marks a significant step forward in her songwriting and artistry, hinting at even more exciting things to come. Clark is currently working on new music, promising further releases in the future. If 'Chicago' is any indication, those releases will be well worth the wait.
