Heavy Feelings have gifted fans with a surprise EP just in time for the holidays. The four-track 'Anatomy' EP arrived on December 20th, hot on the heels of their acclaimed self-titled EP released earlier this year.
The band, who spent the summer working on other projects, have returned with a collection of songs that dive into the complexities of the human experience. Singer Nadia Garofalo explains, "While writing I was thinking a lot about feelings of not belonging, feeling like an extra limb in your own life. That can be so hard to contend with, but it could also be transformative, if you let it."
'Anatomy' sees the band further developing their signature sound, a potent blend of post-punk, goth-rock, trip-hop and no-wave influences. Recorded between Chicago's Altered States studio and guitarist Ben's house in Bristol, the EP captures a raw energy and emotional intensity.
Adding to the already impressive mix, the band enlisted some serious talent for the recording process. Ben Scott Turner (known for his work with Part Chimp, Hey Colossus, Holy Scum, and Wolfer) handled mixing duties at Axe & Trap Studios in Somerset. Drummer Rob Ellis, whose impressive resume includes collaborations with PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi, Bat For Lashes, and Torres, lent his skills to the tracks 'Alright Go' and 'Conveyor'. The final touches were added by mastering engineer Shawn Joseph at Optimum Mastering.
Heavy Feelings continue their collaboration with illustrator Amelia Teixeira for the EP's artwork. Fans can also look forward to a video for 'Alright Go' by visual artist Maeve Clenaghan, expected to drop in the new year.
This transatlantic collaboration has clearly been a fruitful one. As Garofalo notes, "I loved working with these songs, this project has really become a long-distance communication art piece. We have our different lives and time zones and yet manage to effectively collaborate and inform each other's process from a distance."
With its timely themes and captivating sound, 'Anatomy' is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. Heavy Feelings are definitely a band to watch in 2025.
