South Coast producer and songwriter ioakim unveils his highly anticipated sophomore EP, 'wishiwasyourgirlfriend', showcasing a bolder, more evolved sound.
The EP's lead single, 'fibreglass', is a testament to ioakim's growth. Produced alongside renowned Australian artist Wave Racer, the track is a synth-laden, guitar-driven exploration of fading relationships. ioakim explains, "'fibreglass' is reminiscent of a physically and mentally exhausting time. It's about the feeling of someone fading out in your life, and the thought that maybe things could have been different."
A departure from his staunchly DIY approach, ioakim ventured to California to collaborate with notable producers like Jordan Palmer and Day Wave for 'wishiwasyourgirlfriend'. The EP's namesake track, a shimmering indie-rock anthem about unrequited love, sets the tone for the project's narrative of longing and introspection.
"'wishiwasyourgirlfriend' is an EP that feels relentlessly energetic and alive," says ioakim. The artist's signature blend of raw emotion and infectious pop-rock arrangements is evident throughout, drawing inspiration from indie greats like MGMT and The Strokes.
The release of 'wishiwasyourgirlfriend' follows ioakim's 2022 debut EP, 'feel something or nothing at all', and a string of successful singles like 'backseat' and 'eight'. The artist's live performances have also garnered attention, with support slots for MAY-A, Eliza and the Delusionals, and others.
ioakim's creativity extends beyond music, encompassing fashion and graphic design. He writes, produces, and directs his music videos, designs artwork and merchandise, and even screenprints his own upcycled vintage clothing.
With 'wishiwasyourgirlfriend', ioakim has pushed his boundaries and delivered a captivating collection of songs that solidify his place as a rising star in the indie-pop scene.
