Swedish artist Second Choice, the brainchild of seasoned guitarist Fredrik Lindström, has unveiled a captivating new track, ‘Edge of Light’, featuring the poignant lyrics and sweet, haunting vocals of Dimi De San.
As with many of Lindström’s compositions, his latest single wastes little time in making an impact, opening with a rattling barrage of percussion that is wrapped artfully around a free-flowing, spontaneous style. Following closely, behind, Dimi De San ‘s vocals croon beautifully, slowly building to a full operatic sound, while piano keys boldly arrange themselves into a stark, dramatic melody. There's a dark, mesmerising quality stitched throughout the single, even in the earliest stages, and it’s building beautifully on the gothic vibes that took shape in their previous collaborative cut, 'It's Over'.
Yet, while ‘It’s Over’ artfully dwells on feelings of isolation and loss, ‘Edge of Light’ paints a more hopeful and resilient portrait, buoyed perfectly by lines like “In the night, a seed shows,” and “With every tear, I shed my pain / In the silence, I find my name.” The atmospheric instrumentals easily sweep you away, rooted deeply within the track’s weight and emotional impact.
As with many of Lindström’s previous releases, ‘Edge of Light’ also arrives alongside an equally captivating lyric video. This time, scenes of nature blossom, and the lyrics emerge from sunset forests and misty landscapes, tying together the sweeping scenes and isolated spaces with a deep emotional message.
Once again, with a beautiful voice and deeply human lyrics, Lindström and Dimi De San push the boundaries, continuing to bring gothic vibes to the forefront of their collaborative sound. Drawing influence from a diverse range of artists including Nightwish, Portishead, and Heilung, they weave a unique blend, resulting in a sound that is both familiar and innovative, with elements of gothic metal, trip-hop, and folk woven together to create a rich tapestry of sound.
Fredrik Lindström's music is a medium of expanding, emotive spaces. The composition and production easily carry the weight and emotional toil, balancing the beauty and haunting melodies in Dimi De San ‘s vocals.
With ‘Edge of Light’, as with all his releases, Lindström’s project continues to push the boundaries of gothic music, delivering a release that is both hauntingly beautiful and emotionally resonant.
