Having found hope and foundation in previous single ‘Growing Pains’, existential indie-rock star Siobhan Cotchin has returned with an introspective and ruminative new track that dives even deeper into the idea of finding your place and identity.
On the surface, this country-grunge inspired song carries the classic singer-songwriter traits throughout, but reaching beneath the melodies ‘Fill My Cup’ is a song for those feeling lost in their own skin, struggling to make meaning in a world of constant change and upheaval.
Speaking openly about the new single, Siobhan explained, “‘Fill My Cup’ is a song about being exhausted from life and wanting to know if there’s anything more than what we already have right now. It’s about my fear of not reaching my potential and trying to understand my place in the world. I have written a lot of songs about this existential dread that I think everyone feels and it really helps me cope with those thoughts. I’ve also always wanted to write a drinking song that goes a little deeper and more introspective, but is also fun and anthemic. This song is for anyone who feels a little lost and is struggling to find meaning in these insane times. It has been a crazy few years and I want people to know that they’re not alone.”
She continued, “The recording process for 'Fill My Cup' was obviously a great time, and was also super different to the last sessions we did for 'Growing Pains'. 'Fill My Cup' went through a lot of changes, and it was awesome to have Sam’s input into the track and have a different perspective in the studio. I think that is what creates the best results. We all had heaps of fun laying down the track and I’m especially proud of the vocal takes I did. I’m really starting to enjoy recording vocals, it’s not as stressful because I feel more sure of myself and able to try out new things.”
Taking heed from trailblazers such as Kasey Musgraves and Lucy Dacus, Siobhan is the Australian front-runner of powerful women, shaping their own sound around their influences, paying no attention to preconceived notions or genre-barriers.
Siobhan finds herself with a slew of shows across Western Australia, as well as interstate. Her eyes are firmly set on her ‘Fill My Cup’ release show, which is set to launch Saturday, September 10th at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle. However, a string of shows around that date will also provide her the opportunity to stretch her cathartic vocal muscles and perform for fans and soon-to-be fans - sharing stages with SUPATHICK, Abbe May, Didirri, Leon Bridges, Thelma Plum, The Whitlams, and more across August and September. A coveted BIGSOUND slot has also been confirmed, with Siobhan likely an act on numerous “must watch” lists before she heads home.
