Athena Lim, the Canadian, UK-based artist who burst onto the London music scene in 2023, has just released her second single, 'Madrid'. This gorgeous new single follows hot on the heels of her debut EP, 'Hello Frances', which dropped this past summer.
'Madrid' is a captivating indie-folk track with a raw, tribal undercurrent. It's a song brimming with emotion, intensity, and a delicate vulnerability. While Lim's songwriting draws heavily from folk legends like Bob Dylan, 'Madrid' showcases the eclecticism that defines her unique sound.
Lim isn't afraid to blend genres, citing influences ranging from pop and funk to gospel and reggae. "I'm not really interested in emulating popular trends in music," she explains. "I just want to make music that speaks to me and moves me, and I love all kinds of music." This love for diverse sounds is evident in her music, which seamlessly weaves together elements of indie-folk-pop with a hint of something altogether more primal.
Fans of Parliament-Funkadelic and Toots and the Maytals, two of Lim's favourite bands, will appreciate the infectious energy that pulsates through her work. This vibrant sound is further enhanced by her collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and producer James Atin-Godden. Atin-Godden, who has produced all of Lim's music to date, is currently working with her on her highly anticipated debut LP.
Although Lim is a relatively new artist, she has already made a significant impact. Her decision to defer her acceptance to the Royal College of Art and Design in London to pursue music speaks volumes about her dedication. With work already underway on her first album, slated for release in 2025, it's clear that Lim is a force to be reckoned with. One thing is certain - we can expect to hear much more from this talented artist in the future.
