Melbourne-based artist Mint Tulip, the moniker of Abbey Barnes, has dropped her latest single, 'Radio', a captivating blend of dark, atmospheric sounds with hints of shoegaze and country. Released earlier this month, the track showcases Barnes' talent for crafting immersive soundscapes and introspective lyrics.
'Radio' was written and performed by Barnes, with lead guitar and synth contributions from Alex Pijpers of the Melbourne band Walt. The track was mixed and mastered by Aden Senycia at Footscray's Love Shack Studios, who has previously worked with notable acts like Tamara and the Dreams and Body Type Band.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Big Thief, Gillian Welch, Cate Le Bon, and Mazzy Star, Mint Tulip creates a sound that is both familiar and unique. Barnes' vocals, reminiscent of Hope Sandoval's ethereal delivery, glide over layers of hazy guitars and subtle synth textures. The track's haunting atmosphere is further enhanced by Pijpers' lead guitar, which brings to mind the work of Buck Meek from Big Thief.
Speaking about the song's meaning, Barnes reveals, "When I wrote this song, I originally thought it was a love song about someone else, about the type of love I would like to manifest into my life, but now I realise this song was always a love song to myself, about believing in myself and loving myself."
The music video for 'Radio', directed by Barnes herself, draws inspiration from the classic children's nursery rhyme 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat'. This whimsical touch adds another layer to the song's already rich tapestry, hinting at themes of self-discovery and empowerment.
'Radio' is Mint Tulip's third single release of 2024, following 'Mermaid' and 'Flowers'. With each release, Barnes continues to refine her sound and solidify her place in the Australian music scene. Keep an eye out for upcoming Melbourne gigs in the new year.
