BB Sabina has returned, and they're bringing a storm of sound with their latest single, 'Multitude', out March 21st. We've had the privilege of an early listen, and it’s clear this isn't just another track; it's a sonic manifesto.
After three years of refining their sound and solidifying their lineup, BB Sabina are poised to make a bold statement. 'Multitude' is an expansive piece, weaving together shimmering synth textures, deep, resonant bass, and relentless drum rhythms. The track effortlessly blends elements of synthwave, trip-hop, post-rock, and electronica, creating a mesmerising soundscape that draws the listener into a world of complex layers.
At its core, 'Multitude' is a defiant stand against rigid categorisation. Layered, ethereal vocals intertwine, delivering a powerful message about the multifaceted nature of identity. BB Sabina's refusal to be easily defined is not just a stylistic choice; it's central to their artistic ethos.
"The song explores what it means to contain many facets and contradictions and to be in a constant state of flux - the beauty and magic of this. It’s a reflection on queerness, gender and beyond. The song feels like a strong statement about who I am. How I don’t easily fit into a box, and feeling uncomfortable when someone tries to put me in a box, how this can feel so limiting," explains songwriter Beth Uhe.
Uhe's journey with BB Sabina began in the Northern Territory, where she recorded their debut EP in Mparntwe / Alice Springs, releasing it in 2019. A move back to Naarm / Melbourne in 2020 sparked a period of sonic experimentation. Following the end of lockdowns, Uhe was eager to build a band and return to live performance. Bassist Warrick joined after responding to an advertisement, and drummer Travis, a long-time collaborator of Warrick's, completed the trio. The band's chemistry is palpable, forged through shared admiration for artists like Björk, Portishead, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Suicide, and PJ Harvey.
The groundwork for 'Multitude' was laid at Kakadu Studios, with Warrick taking on engineering duties alongside Sean Hutton. BB Sabina produced the track, with mixing by Aden Senycia and mastering by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering, ensuring a polished and impactful final product. 'Multitude' is more than just a song; it's an immersive experience, a declaration of individuality, and a testament to the power of sonic exploration.
