Newcastle's rising indie-pop darling Mishayla is back with a brand new single, and it's already stuck in our heads. Following up on the success of her previous release, 'best thing (i never had)', Mishayla has dropped 'Clutter, a track that perfectly captures those heart-fluttering early days of a crush.
If you're a fan of artists like Gracie Abrams and Holly Humberstone, with a dash of Olivia Rodrigo's lyrical vulnerability, then Mishayla is right up your alley. 'Clutter' showcases her signature dreamy vocals and knack for crafting infectious melodies, all wrapped up in a shimmering pop package.
But it's not just catchy tunes here; Mishayla dives deep lyrically, exploring the all-consuming nature of infatuation. As she puts it, “The track is called ‘Clutter’ because it reflects how someone can completely take over your thoughts. It’s that feeling of your mind being full of them, like they’re cluttering your brain in the best way possible.”
And she's nailed that feeling sonically. From the romantic piano melodies that open the track to the lush and lively chorus, 'Clutter' feels both intimate and anthemic. Mishayla explains, “I wanted the song to truly capture the essence of that initial feeling of a crush...every element- I wanted to evoke vulnerability and authenticity. I hope listeners connect with it just as deeply.”
Adding another layer to the release, Mishayla has also dropped a music video for 'Clutter', directed by Nikola Jovanovic. Shot in a cosy Newcastle café, The Press Coffee and Book House, the video has a distinct early 2000s aesthetic that complements the song's nostalgic vibe. “There’s a little café across from my university...with such a cosy vibe," Mishayla shares. "My amazing photographer and videographer, Nikola Jokanovic, really captured the warmth and aesthetic I envisioned.”
With 'Clutter', Mishayla continues to establish herself as a force to be reckoned with in the indie-pop scene. Keep an eye on this rising star – she's clearly going places.
