An Interview with Darren Skye

  • 3 min read

A talented singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and more, Darren Skye has been crafting a unique and wonderful evocative R&B sound ever since he was young. Armed with a polished and wonderfully emotive sound that drifts between modern soul and ambient pop, Darren has impressed fans and critics alike with his music, and now, on the eve of his new project coming to light, we couldn’t wait to sit down and find out more about him.

Thank you for joining us today, Darren. Where did all this begin for you? How did you first start making music?

“I first started making music when I was about fifteen. I’ve always had an artistic inclination even in my adolescence. I got my first Yamaha keyboard around fifteen and that's where I discovered an intense interest for manipulating sounds, layering beats and mixing them together with melodies and words. It was incredibly satisfying.”

Over the years, you’ve developed a wonderfully unique style. How would you describe your sound to those who haven’t heard your music yet?

“I believe my home to be in RnB and Soul. If ever I wanted to feel something, those genres are what evokes and awakens something in me. It's that type of inspiration that motivated me to inspire others.”

What influences would you say most define your music?

“I'd like to classify my music in a class of its own. However, people need to associate some type of familiarity to describe their experience. Many people think of Frank Ocean or Usher.”

What is your songwriting process? How does it all come together?

“It comes, it goes. Sometimes I chase, sometimes I let it come to me. But it's all a consequence of experience. Anything can inspire creativity. The brush of wind, the sensor alarm at the grocery store. Sometimes it can take years to complete a song as there is something I have to experience to complete it. Sometimes it takes an hour.”

What’s the most important thing for you when you’re writing a song?

“The hardest thing to do is speak on the ineffable. I often try to incorporate, whether subtly or more conspicuously, something timeless into my music.”

Your previous singles have all enjoyed success, but can you tell us a bit about your new release?

“Well, I have a project I'm pretty excited about that will be released on April 21st. This project is entitled ‘MOTIONS’.”

Once ‘MOTIONS’ is out, what’s next for you as an artist?

“Create, create, create. It's in my nature to do so. Sometimes all you need to do is allow yourself to be a conduit of creative energy and the rest works itself out. I hope to make another project in the near future.”

A few final questions before you go, what has been your greatest moment as an artist so far?

“As cliche as it sounds, it’s really the little things that are so impactful. Thunderous applause and standing ovations are nice but when someone goes out of their way to tell you how much of an impact you made on them, it's really special.”

Is there anything you would like to say to our audience?

“Check out my new project. come to my shows. Listening party coming soon. all will be posted to my page. I LOVE YOU.”
