Todd Faroe Talks About Broken Hearts, False Starts, and Finding his Voice

Todd Faroe is an alt. hip-hop artist making waves internationally, with a sound that's caught the ears of listeners in France, Africa, and the UK. His latest EP, ‘Broken Hearts False Starts’, is a raw and unfiltered exploration of self-doubt and artistic evolution. We caught up with Todd to delve into his musical journey, the inspiration behind his unique sound, and what the future holds for this rising star.

In this interview, we cover Todd's early beginnings in music, tracing his journey back to those formative moments freestyling with his brother. We explore the eclectic mix of influences that have shaped his sound, from the alternative hip-hop of Gorillaz and Andre 3000 to the electronic vibes of Sneaker Pimps and Flying Lotus/Captain Murphy. Todd also opens up about the personal experiences that fuelled the creation of ‘Broken Hearts False Starts’, discussing his songwriting process and the evolution of his style.

Thanks for dropping by to speak with us, Todd! When did you first start making music? Where did it all begin, and what inspired you?

“It finally clicked one night when I was about eight or nine, and I heard my older brother and his homie freestyling over whatever song was on the radio. Being the little bro and trying to be cool like them, I tried to join in and rap like them. Of course, it was terrible, but they saw that I was trying and excited about it. They saw that first tiny spark in me and taught me the basics. And as time went on, I got better. My taste in music and inspiration was growing. If I had to say what inspires me and how I sound, it’s Gorillaz, Andre’ 3000, Sneaker Pimps, and Flying Lotus/Captain Murphy.”

You have a new EP dropping on Bandcamp; can you tell us a bit about it and what it means to you?

“’Broken Hearts False Starts’ is a five-song EP that I put out to… let’s just say, let off some steam.”

What was your songwriting process for the EP? How did it all come together?

“Just everything that has happened to me in these past couple of years. It almost got to a point where I started to discredit myself and everything that I’ve accomplished. Basic self-doubt, shit all artists get from time to time. Then I just got mad… Mad at myself mostly because I know how great I am! I just needed to let go and stop watering down myself.”

How would you describe the sound on the EP? Has there been a change or evolution in style since you first began?

“Definitely more raw and unfiltered! I mean… I still have the same style and passion from when I genuinely started. So, it has evolved over time. I just found a way to combine it all together to where it’s always entertaining to the listeners.”

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?

“I’m not sure yet, and that’s the best part. Not knowing what’s ahead, because life can bring some surprises along the way and derail whatever I had planned from the start. With music and personally.”

Is there anything you would like to say to our audience? How can they connect with you and help support you?
