Jair Dominic Baillie, the 23-year-old American artist known as King Wixard, is busy making waves in New York City. With a unique blend of emo, trap, and hip-hop influences, King Wixard is carving out his own space as a singular voice for his generation. His latest single, 'Sidelines', showcases his ability to express complex emotions with raw honesty and musical innovation.
In this interview, we caught up with King Wixard to discuss his music, tracing his path from singing along to pop icons as a child to forming a rock band in middle school. King Wixard opens up about the evolution of his musical style, from his early days as a rock vocalist to his current identity as a true hip-hop innovator.
It’s great to speak with you today, King Wixard, thanks for taking the time out. When did you first start making music? Where did it all begin, and what inspired you?
“I’ve always been singing since a kid, whether it was Bruno Mars on the radio or Ke$ha on my iPod. The first official songs I ever wrote were for my rock band back in middle school though I don’t think I’d want those songs to ever see the light of day. What inspired me to make music? It’s my best way of expressing myself, some things you can’t say or convey in conversation and that’s what music is for me.”
You’ve been steadily releasing singles over the last few years. Can you tell us a bit about ‘Sidelines’, your latest?
“My latest release means the world to me though I think it’s about time to give the people something new. This song signifies that feeling when you’re removed from the centre of activity but unapologetically won’t dilute yourself or bring your self-worth down.”
Are there any artists, moments, or experiences that influenced you when writing the track?
“There’s a bunch of artists who’ve had a noticeable influence on me, specifically for this release. I’d say Daft Punk with how he atomically presents a sound. Kid Cudi is a big one; I also take heavy influences from 2000s emo like All Time Low, Green Day and Good Charlotte!“
How would you describe the sound on ‘Sidelines’, and has there been a change or evolution in style since you first began?
“As an artist, I feel as if I’m constantly evolving; I’d describe the sound as a modern-day grunge for now though. There has been a noticeable change from my initial introduction to music as a rock vocalist to my identity as a hip-hop icon, but it’s all come together to make King Wixard.”
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?
“In the next few years, I see myself taking the world by storm! Like say this time next year I’ll probably be headlining a tour for my debut album ‘Euphoria’; as the top contender for any and every award that I qualify for. Musically I see myself pushing boundaries within the mainstream media. Especially when the ‘Euphoria’ kicks in!”
What's next after this release?
“Actually, I’ve been working on a lot of music - as for recent releases, I think that it’s about time to give the world something new to digest! I’m thinking of releasing a new song or three in mid-March and couldn’t be more excited.”
