Australian alt-pop artist Chymes has always been known for her unique blend of genres and sounds, but her latest EP, 'Alien', takes this to a whole new level. Released via Nettwerk, the EP sees Chymes embracing a playful, hyper-pop aesthetic that's as vibrant and quirky as the artist herself.
This new direction follows Chymes' 2023 EP, 'Game Over', which explored a darker, edgier side to her music. After a period of intense creative output, Chymes decided to shift her focus from productivity to pure joy, resulting in the intergalactic exploration of self that is 'Alien'.
“This EP is very special to me because I felt a lot of personal and emotional freedom creating it," Chymes explains. "When we were writing these songs, it was during a time where I felt like I finally met myself and was actually embracing who I am and celebrating what makes me weird or different."
This newfound sense of freedom is palpable throughout the EP. Earlier releases like 'UFO' and 'Sweet' introduced us to this brighter, hyper-pop infused Chymes, full of playful energy and irresistible hooks. 'Voodoo Doll' offered a nod to her previous darker sound, while 'Celestial' showcased a vulnerable yet joyful side. The EP culminates with 'Sour', another earworm that perfectly encapsulates Chymes' unique blend of colourful electronic sounds and confident vocals.
'Alien' is a testament to Chymes' growth as an artist. She's not afraid to experiment, to embrace her individuality, and to create music that is both deeply personal and undeniably catchy. In her own words, taken from the EP itself: "Work of art / Come so far and I’m only ‘bout to start / And I’m not coming down / Got the whole universe on my side / Every day I can feel it, I’m celestial.” This mantra perfectly captures the spirit of 'Alien' and the artist behind it. Chymes is here to stay, and she's bringing her whole universe with her.
