West Australian indie-rock darlings Great Gable continue their triumphant march toward the release of their third studio album, 'Small Fry', with the unveiling of their latest single, 'You Shall Not Pass'. The track, bursting with the band's signature sun-drenched energy, is the fourth offering from the album, following the previously released singles ‘Best Friend’, ‘Think Again Motherf*cker’ and ‘Fine Wine’.
Frontman Alex Whiteman sheds light on the creative process behind the song, revealing its spontaneous nature. "The lyrics kind of streamed out as I was playing the chords," he says. "I'm still piecing together what the whole song means, but I think I’m saying I need to back myself more and not let doubt get the best of me." The track's lyrical honesty, paired with Whiteman's unapologetic Aussie twang, makes "You Shall Not Pass" another relatable anthem from the band.
'Small Fry' marks a homecoming for Great Gable. Recorded in their native Perth for the first time since 2018, the album is a testament to the unique charm of Western Australia. "A lot of the album reflects on my experiences growing up down south," Whiteman explains. "It’s a mix of emotions, a bit of nostalgia and sentimentality. I think that authenticity is what makes the album special for me."
This authenticity is evident in the album's sonic landscape. From the raucous energy of "Best Friend" to the gentle introspection of 'Asleep', 'Small Fry' captures the full spectrum of Great Gable's musical prowess. The album's production, helmed by Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane, Jebediah), expertly balances raw emotion with polished sound. "He was really good at keeping the original vibes of the demos I had, while enhancing the overall sound quality," Whiteman notes.
'Small Fry' is a testament to Great Gable's ability to create music that resonates on a universal level. The album is at once a comforting companion for quiet moments and the perfect soundtrack for a raucous celebration. This versatility is a hallmark of Great Gable's music, and it's never been more evident than on 'Small Fry'.
As anticipation for the album's release builds, Great Gable are gearing up for a packed 2024. Following their recent UK & Europe tour and upcoming festival appearances, the band will return to Australia for a run of album launch shows and a nationwide headline tour in March 2025. With 'Small Fry', Great Gable are set to solidify their place as one of Australia's most exciting indie-rock acts.
